The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) is a powerful program to reduce stress, maintain balance, and help you experience life more fully.Ease Your Mind, Enhance Your Life
The Syracuse University Counseling Center is located at 200 Walnut Place. The Counseling Center offers a variety of mental health services including: individual counseling, group counseling, consultation, referrals, emergency services, and preventive mental health outreach and education.
Individual Counseling
Students are seen for confidential individual counseling, on a short-term basis, to discuss concerns related to personal, educational, relationship, family, substance abuse, and other social or emotional problems. The number of sessions is based on the student's need and the therapist's judgment. Students who would benefit from ongoing counseling will be assisted in finding an appropriate therapist in the community.
Group Counseling
We believe that meeting with others dealing with similar issues can promote growth and be beneficial. The Counseling Center offers group counseling opportunities each semester, depending on student need. Students may contact the Counseling Center to inquire about the groups being offered for any given semester, or check out our Groups page.
Eligibility
During the fall and spring semesters, all full-time graduate and undergraduate students from Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry who have paid their health fee are eligible for short-term counseling services. During the summer months, eligibility for short-term counseling services is limited to the summer session(s) in which the student is enrolled for course credit (i.e., Maymester, Summer Session I, Summer Session II, and Combined Summer Session).
Throughout the year, crisis consultation services and referral assistance are available for all Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF students regardless of current enrollment status.
Consultation
Our therapists are available to consult with you about any situations of concern. Sometimes you may want to just speak with someone before making an appointment, or before determining what you may need. Please feel free to consult with our therapists, either by phone or in person, and we will be happy to help you think through the situation.
Referrals
Our therapists are always evaluating how a student is doing. Occasionally, a referral is necessary to other University services or to services within the greater Syracuse community to best meet the needs of the student.
Emergency Services
During the fall and spring semester, the Counseling Center maintains emergency services 24 hours a day. If you or someone you know is experiencing an urgent crisis, the Counseling Center provides consultation, assessment, and evaluation as needed.
Outreach and Education
The Counseling Center provides prevention education and outreach to the entire University community on suicide, depression, anxiety, and other relevant mental health topics. Inquiries about these services can be made directly to the Counseling Center.
